A Deep Dive Into the SV 971A

Most sound level meters are built on the idea of doing one job well. But then what happens when your work isn’t always just one type of job. Acoustic consultants, health & safety managers, occupational hygienists and any job in the management of sound, require a versatile meter. This is where the SV 971A comes in.

What is an SV 971A?

The 971A is Svantek’s Class 1 sound level meter, designed to meet IEC 61672 and built handle the potentially rough and harsh environments this industry exposes your SLM to. It complies with the full range of standards professionals actually need to work to, including:

  • ISO 9612
  • OSHA
  • MSHA
  • ACGIH
  • ISO 4869-2 (hearing protector selection)
  • ISO 16283 (building acoustics)

This means that as a sound level meter, it can be equally as useful doing noise at work assessments as it could be measuring sound insulation between two rooms. And with a 24 hour battery life, 120dBA dynamic range (20 dBA – 140 dBA) and Bluetooth connectivity, this meter is designed not only to be versatile, but also to be effective.

Why the Apps Matter

What makes the SV 971A so unique and versatile, is it’s supporting apps and software. Most meters rely on regular firmware updates which can not only outdate your meter very quickly but also become a hassle to keep track of and regularly update.

The SV 971A resolves this issue, by moving the burden of software off the meter and on to your phone. Of course, the 971A still has strong internal software, but the true power comes in the form of mobile apps. Between the two, most of the heavy lifting, i.e. calculation, compliance checks, report formatting, happens automatically, rather than being left to spreadsheets after the measurement.

Assistant Pro connects to the meter via Bluetooth, letting you view live results, start and stop measurements remotely, and validate data on site from an Android or iOS device. It also integrates with SvanNET, so meters can be linked directly to online projects.

Building Acoustics Assistant is built specifically around the RT60 and STIPA workflows, guiding users through ISO 16283 calculations and presenting sound insulation results as an ISO-compliant report, directly from the app.

Small Meter, Big Power

The SV 971A weighs in at only 225g and stands at 23cm tall. This officially makes it the smallest Class 1 SLM on the market. At this size, you could literally fit it in your pocket, making it ideal for noise monitoring on the go.

But, despite this small size, it still packs a punch. The SV 971A runs for up to 24 hours on 4 AAA batteries. This gives you long term use for days / weeks.

The Smallest Class 1 Sound Level Meter

RT60 & 1/1 + 1/3 Octaves

Knowing something is loud isn’t always enough to fix it. Octave band analysis lets you pinpoint which frequencies are actually causing the problem, so you can recommend the right fix instead of guessing.

RT60 per band does the same for room acoustics, showing exactly where reverberation is falling short rather than relying on one overall figure. For anyone specifying treatment, chasing a noise source or signing off a room, that’s the difference between a rough estimate and a result you can act on.

Memory & Advanced Analysis

The SV 971A has a 32GB memory which allows you to store files in WAV format, providing audio recording. Once these are stored, more complex analysis can be carried out using the SvanPC++ Building Acoustics software module. The software’s built-in calculator automatically averages 1/n octave spectra time histories and calculates reverberation time, turning raw frequency data into a finished RT60 result without any manual maths.

Tailor Your Meter with Our Packages

We’ve already established how versatile the SV 971A is. This is why we offer a range of curated packages to suit your different needs and applications. This ranges from our best selling ‘Starter Pack’ to more advanced packs like our ‘Reverberation Packs’ and even to environmental monitoring solutions with our ‘MOLES Kit’.

Starter Pack

This provides Class 1 measurements out of the box, with 1/1 & 1/3 octave analysis, audio recording and a protective case. The best-selling option for routine noise assessments.

Advanced Pack

This includes everything in the Starter Pack, plus a Class 1 acoustic calibrator for regular field verification.

Professional Pack

The complete solution: SV 971A, Class 1 calibrator and a SvanPC++ environmental module license, for consultants who need deeper analysis and reporting.

Reverberation Time Pack

This is designed like the Starter Pack, but with RT60 analysis added, this is best for building acoustics and room acoustic evaluations.

Reverberation Time ++ Pack

Containing the same as the RT pack, but with UKAS calibration included. This is best for surveys that require documented, traceable measurements.

MOLES 2.0 Kit

Using an external housing unit and battery, this kit transforms the SV 971A into a full environmental noise monitor, built for unattended outdoor deployment with up to 4 weeks of battery life.
