What is Sound Power Level?

Sound power is the total energy a source emits as sound, measured in watts.

Unlike sound pressure, which depends on where you measure, sound power is an absolute property of the source itself. It’s calculated using sound pressure measurements around the source and applying formulas that account for area and distance. This makes it a key parameter for comparing different machines or equipment, regardless of the environment they’re in.

Sound power is widely used in product testing, machinery standards, and environmental assessments, giving a reliable way to rate and compare noise emissions. In this video, we break down what sound power is, how it’s measured, and why it’s so important in acoustics. Want to learn more about sound measurement terms?
