Introducing the CRY3213 Ruggedised Measurement Microphone, Designed for the Harshest Environments

We are pleased to announce the arrival of the CRY3213 NVH measurement microphone from Crysound, designed specifically for accurate and repeatable measurements in automotive, aerospace and engineering noise vibration harshness testing.

Developed for engineers, the CRY3213 offers a practical and cost effective option for both new and existing test setups.

Built for Consistent Performance in Demanding Environments

Accurate NVH measurement in automotive environments has never been more demanding. From extreme temperatures and high vibration levels to water ingress, contamination, and electromagnetic interference, modern vehicle testing pushes microphones far beyond the controlled conditions of a laboratory.

Reliable data and efficient test methods have always been fundamental to acoustic noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) testing. However, as vehicles continue to evolve, the demand for higher-quality data and more robust measurement approaches has become increasingly critical. The transition to electric, hybrid and autonomous vehicles introduces new NVH challenges, requiring informed analysis and careful engineering trade-off decisions.

Fully optimised for NVH

In full-vehicle and powertrain testing, microphones are frequently installed in locations such as engine bays, wheel arches, underbodies, and close to electric drive systems. These environments expose sensors to a combination of:

  • Severe temperature fluctuations
  • Water, oil, dust and road debris
  • High shock and vibration levels
  • Strong electromagnetic fields
  • Frequent installation, removal and reconfigurations

The CRY3213 is built for long-term stability and robustness, helping you to maintain consistent results where temperature variation, and repeated testing are unavoidable. Some of the key specs include:

  • Waterproof & dustproof – safe to use in humid or environments where water splashing may occur. Compliant with IP67 standards
  • EMC Immunity – making the CRY3213 suitable for harsh electromagnetic environments
  • Shock resistance – mitigates risks from accidental drops and mechanical vibrations
  • Extreme temperature performance – designed to operate in the temperature range of –50 °C to +125 °C

A robust temperature tolerance

As a ½-inch free-field, prepolarised measurement microphone, it covers the full human hearing range, making it suitable for everything from low-noise idle investigations to high sound pressure levels at elevated engine speeds.

One of the most common challenges engineers often face in vehicle testing, is sensitivity drift caused by moisture ingress, contamination, or mechanical stress. The CRY3213 addresses this through its multi-layer protective design, helping maintain measurement integrity over extended test periods.

The multi-layer protective design is made up of a titanium alloy perforated grille, high acoustic transparency dust mesh and full sealed waterproof design around connectors, vents and critical components

These design features help ensure a stable output, even after repeated exposure to harsh environments.

How to Select the Correct Microphone

Selecting the most appropriate measurement microphone is critical to achieving reliable NVH data, particularly where operating conditions, frequency range and dynamic range vary between test scenarios.

To help with this, AcSoft have created the Measurement Microphone Selection Tool, designed to help engineers identify suitable microphones based on key applications and specification parameters.
